I’ve met a lot of people who are afraid of using the Kitchener stitch, often referred to as grafting. It’s actually much simpler than most people fear! You’re using a tapestry needle instead of knitting needles but it’s just putting the yarn through as if to knit (knitwise) or as if to purl (purlwise).
And the best part? You can use it on more than just Stockinette Stitch! Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus! You can graft ribbing, cables, stockinette or reverse stockinette. Follow the handy chart below to graft your pattern.
To keep the chart simple “knit” means “insert the needle into the stitch knitwise” and “purl” means “insert the needle into the stitch purlwise”.
First, you need to do a few setup stitches.
1) Purl into the first stitch on the front needle
2)Knit into the first stitch on the back needle
Now you’re ready to start grafting!
